Climate Smart Group was selected to run the NMCP as a result of our team members’ extensive experience running similar Agricultural projects in Alberta, Canada, North America’s first compliance offset market. Our Canadian subsidiary, Carbon Credit Solutions Inc., founded in 2008, has over 7 million acres under contract and has paid out over $25 million to Canadian growers for carbon credits. You can view the Carbon Credit Solutions Canadian website here, or search for Carbon Credit Solutions projects on the Alberta carbon credit registry here.
We have a contract in place with a buyer who has guaranteed a sale price for these credits, so our growers don’t need to worry about market demand. Click here for further details about the project structure and funding.
Climate Smart Group’s (CSG) Nitrogen Management Credit Program (NMCP) offers growers financial incentives for reducing Nitrous Oxide (N2O) emissions from synthetic and organic N-fertilizers applied to their fields. Growers can increase the efficiency of N-based fertilizer use without affecting yield. Increased efficiency means lower input costs and reduced emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), a gas which contributes to climate change.CSG converts reductions in N2O emissions into emission reduction credits which are sold into the US carbon market, providing a new revenue stream to growers. This voluntary and market-based approach pays thoughtful, sustainable growers for the environmental benefits of their activities—all without government intervention.
How do I know if I’m eligible?
Eligible participants are corn farmers in the North Central Region (as shown on the map) who are interested in improving N-use efficiency and can document that they have reduced, or are willing to reduce N fertilizer applications to the corn component of their crop rotation.
How much does it pay and how much will it cost me?
There is no out-of-pocket cost to participate in this program. Individual revenues will be based on the number of credits you generate by reduced fertilizer application as part of your nutrient management plan. The only cost to you is the time it takes to provide the data.
Data Confidentiality
Data collected from growers as part of a Climate Smart Group program will not be used for any purpose other than the generation of carbon credits. Data will only be disclosed to a third-party as part of the credit generation process (for example certain data needs to be confidentially disclosed to a carbon credit Validation & Verification organization or a credit issuing body). Growers’ personal data and farm/field locations will not be posted publicly.
Corn growers in the NCR interested in talking to us about carbon credit opportunities from reduced nitrogen usage, please complete the NMCP Initial Assessment here.
The information you provide will be used to determine eligibility and estimate the credit value to you resulting from reduced fertilizer use. Once you have completed the Assessment, someone from our team will contact you to communicate your suitability for the program, estimated credit value, and to outline how to proceed with the program if you choose to do so.
